Radical Numerics Reports First Human Administration of AI-Designed Phage Therapy
San Francisco-based AI lab Radical Numerics announced that its new model, Omnii-1, was used to design a bacteriophage cocktail administered to a human patient with an antibiotic-resistant infection. The treatment was approved under a compassionate-use pathway, marking the first reported clinical use of AI-designed phages. While laboratory tests confirmed the phages eliminated the patient's specific bacterial isolate, the company withheld clinical outcome data to protect patient privacy. The development aims to accelerate the search for treatments against superbugs, which are projected to cause nearly 40 million deaths by 2050.
