Abbott Seeks to Split $7.5B Federal Border Refund Between Tax Cuts and OLS Funding
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on October 2, 2026, that the state will use a $7.5 billion federal reimbursement for border security costs to fund property tax relief, while maintaining funding for Operation Lone Star. Abbott stated he wants to allocate 'as much as possible' to tax reductions but emphasized that border security must continue indefinitely. The reimbursement, approved by the Department of Homeland Security, covers costs incurred during the previous administration. Abbott also indicated Texas is seeking an additional $3 billion from the Department of Justice, aiming to recover 75% of that amount. Comptroller Don Huffines supported the move, noting the funds strengthen the state's position for tax relief in the next legislative session. The announcement coincided with a proclamation designating October as Law Enforcement Appreciation Month.
