Norway: Crown Princess's son convicted of rape, sentenced to four years
Marius Borg Høiby, 29, the Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son, was found guilty in Oslo District Court of two counts of rape and several related offenses, receiving a four-year prison term. Four of six alleged incidents resulted in conviction, with two rapes acquitted; prosecutors sought about seven and a half years, while the defense urged 18 months. The verdict, delivered partly via video as Høiby attended from custody, involved video evidence and victims who were incapacitated or asleep. He faces an appeal, and 640,000 kroner in compensation was ordered to four victims. The case has cast a shadow over the royal family, though the palace declined further comment amid Mette-Marit’s serious illness and lung transplant waiting list.
