Cone’s tribute spotlights Cabrera’s DFA and the Yankees’ roster reality

David Cone publicly praised Oswaldo Cabrera on Twitter after the Yankees designated him for assignment to clear 40-man space for Clarke Schmidt, underscoring the human side of a roster-driven decision. Cabrera had a bounce-back 2026 season and remained a fan favorite for his energy and versatility, but crowding on the roster left him without a clear role. Boone voiced optimism about his future. If claimed by another team, Cabrera would be under club control for three more seasons at about $1.2 million, making him an appealing depth option in a rebuild; if unclaimed, Yankees fans would likely welcome him back.
