Mumps Outbreak Forces SDSU Football to Roster Shortfalls Ahead of Pac-12 Debut
A mumps outbreak at San Diego State University has grown to 14 confirmed cases and one probable case among the football team, complicating the Aztecs' upcoming Pac-12 opener against Texas State. While the university initially reported only three cases on September 18, the number has risen significantly, with all infections isolated to the athletic squad. In response, SDSU is conducting daily screenings, contact tracing, and offering free MMR vaccine boosters at the Calpulli Center. The outbreak coincides with a broader injury crisis, as the team listed nearly 30 players on its Pac-12 availability report, including key starters listed as out or doubtful. Coach Sean Lewis cited privacy laws to avoid naming infected players but acknowledged the team is facing a 'storm' of health and injury issues. The Aztecs, currently 1-3, face a 7:30 p.m. game at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, with Texas State also reporting 14 players on their own availability report.
