FDA Approves Groundbreaking Sunscreen Ingredient for Safer UV Protection
The U.S. FDA has approved bemotrizinol (BEMT) as a new sunscreen ingredient—the first new chemical approved for US sunscreens in more than 25 years—providing broad-spectrum UVA/UVB coverage with notable photostability. The FDA considers BEMT generally safe and effective for adults and children over six months, with studies showing minimal skin absorption and no evidence of cancer or adverse reproductive effects; the first BEMT-based sunscreens will be marketed under Parsol Shield in the US, with broader industry adoption following about 18 months.
