Biden administration takes bold steps to curb power plant emissions and tackle climate change.

The Biden administration has proposed a plan to limit carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, which are responsible for over a quarter of US emissions, by requiring the installation of carbon capture equipment or the use of low-emissions hydrogen as fuel. The proposal is expected to cut carbon emissions from coal plants and new gas plants by 617 million tonnes between 2028 and 2042. The plan is subject to the regulatory rule-making process and a public comment period before being finalized. The EPA anticipates the proposal will cost the power industry over $10 billion, while yielding health and climate benefits of around $85 billion.

Manchin to block all Biden's EPA nominees over power plant emissions proposal.

Sen. Joe Manchin, chairman of the Senate Energy Committee, has threatened to oppose all of President Biden's nominees for the Environmental Protection Agency unless the administration rescinds a proposal to limit power plant emissions. Manchin accused the Biden administration of trying to advance a "radical climate agenda" and to "regulate coal and gas-fueled power plants out of existence." The EPA proposal would impose standards on fossil-fuel-burning power plants with the aim of drastically cutting power plant emissions by 2040.
