Donald Trump is increasingly discussing life after the presidency, signaling that a third term in 2028 may not happen. While he continues to tease a potential run, recent remarks suggest a shift in focus toward post-office activities. This development coincides with growing speculation about other potential candidates, including Pete Hegseth and Jon Ossoff, though Trump remains the central figure in the 2028 conversation.
The designated survivor is a Cabinet member who, under presidential eligibility rules, sits at a secure location during the State of the Union to maintain continuity of government if the President is incapacitated; the practice dates to the Cold War and has seen previous Trump-era seconds serve (Interior, Energy, Agriculture Secretaries). This year, Congress has announced Rep. Mike Thompson as the designated survivor, though the White House has not yet named one.
Montana Senator Steve Daines suggests that Donald Trump's 2024 vice-presidential pick will likely become the Republicans' 2028 presidential candidate and serve as president for the following eight years. Trump has reportedly considered various names for his potential running mate, including Senator Tim Scott, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, and others. The choice of running mate could have a significant impact on the 2028 Republican presidential contest, and Trump has emphasized the importance of selecting someone who could be a good president in case of emergency.
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona has been chosen as the "designated survivor" for President Biden's State of the Union address, a security protocol dating back to the Cold War aimed at ensuring continuity in the presidency in the event of a catastrophic event. The designated survivor must be a natural-born U.S. citizen, at least 35 years old, and have been a resident of the U.S. for the past 14 years. This year's choice follows last year's selection of former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo in 2022.
If a sitting president dies while running for reelection, the vice president, in this case Kamala Harris, would assume the presidency. From an electoral standpoint, Harris would replace the deceased president as the Democratic presidential candidate, but his death would likely open the door for other Democrats to enter the 2024 race. State election officials may need to adjust filing deadlines to allow new candidates to enter the race. If the president died during primary season, some states may postpone their scheduled primaries. If the president died after securing their party's nomination but before Election Day, both the Democratic and Republican parties have guidelines in place for selecting an alternate nominee.

The House speaker's race in the United States has been prolonged as Rep. Jim Jordan failed to secure enough support, potentially causing a constitutional crisis as there is currently no one second in line for the presidency. Without a permanent speaker, the House is unable to conduct any business, including voting on important resolutions and reaching a spending deal to prevent a government shutdown. The line of succession, as outlined by the Constitution and the 1947 Presidential Line of Succession Act, includes Vice President Kamala Harris, followed by various Cabinet officials. The longer the House goes without electing a permanent speaker, the greater the risk of a constitutional crisis.
