Six global champions honored for advancing primary health care at WHA79

At the Seventy-ninth World Health Assembly in Geneva on May 20, 2026, WHO and prize foundations honored six laureates from Mali, Thailand, France, Singapore, Bangladesh and Egypt for strengthening primary health care, expanding access to essential services and reducing inequities, including the Dr LEE Jong-wook Memorial Prize for Public Health; the awards also mark 20 years since Dr Lee Jong-wook’s death.

"Mark Your Calendars: World Chagas Disease Day Set for 2023"

World Chagas Disease Day 2023 aims to raise awareness about the disease, which affects 6-7 million people worldwide and causes 12,000 deaths annually. The theme for 2023 is "Time to integrate Chagas disease into primary health care" to address low detection rates and barriers to healthcare access. Chagas disease is prevalent among poor populations in Latin America but is increasingly being detected in other countries and continents. It is often a "silent and silenced disease" with no or mild symptoms. Chagas disease is caused by the protozoan parasite T. cruzi.
