Researchers at North Carolina State University have successfully used CRISPR gene-editing technology to breed poplar trees with reduced lignin content, a major barrier to sustainable wood fiber production. By employing predictive modeling and machine learning, the team identified the most effective gene-editing strategies and produced 174 lines of poplar trees with reduced lignin content and improved wood properties. This breakthrough could revolutionize the pulp and paper industry, making fiber production more efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective. The researchers have launched a startup called TreeCo to further advance the use of CRISPR technologies in forest trees.
