Revolutionary Nerve-Stimulation System Restores Arm Mobility for Quadriplegics

Startup Onward Medical has successfully implanted its ARC nerve stimulation therapy system, which uses a brainwave-driven implantable electrode array, in a patient to restore function and feeling to their hands and arms. The ARC system includes both external and implantable versions, with the external version helping regulate bladder control, blood pressure, and limb function. The implantable version, controlled through wearable components and a smartwatch, has previously enabled paralyzed patients to stand and walk short distances. The recent implantation aims to help a patient with a C4 spinal injury regain movement in their arms, hands, and fingers. Onward Medical hopes to commercialize its external spinal cord stimulation solution by the second half of 2024.

Neuralink, Elon Musk's Brain-Computer Interface, Approved for Human Trials.

Elon Musk's brain implant company Neuralink has received FDA approval to begin human trials of its brain-computer interface. The Neuralink N1 implant is designed to replace a small chunk of a human skull and fit completely underneath a person's skin. Its 64 needle probes are inserted into the brain, allowing 1,024 channels of two-way communication between the brain and a computer chip. The device will be tested first with quadriplegic patients to help them restore their vision and control digital devices. The potential for this device is endless, but concerns about its accessibility and deployment must be approached with caution.
