"Galaxy COSMOS-11142 reveals massive and multiphase gas outflow"

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have detected a massive and multiphase outflow of neutral and ionized gas in the galaxy COSMOS-11142. The outflow is larger than typical values measured in local star-forming galaxies and likely plays a key role in the rapid quenching of star formation in the galaxy. The researchers suggest that the outflow is driven by active galactic nucleus feedback and that heating of the halo gas by radio-mode AGN feedback is required to maintain the galaxy in a quiescent state.
