Early Universe's Thirsty Galaxies
Astronomers are puzzled by the discovery of quenched galaxies in the early universe, where star formation has been shut down. Previous research suggested that active galactic nuclei (AGN) and supernovae could be responsible, but a new study indicates that supernovae are unlikely culprits for these galaxies. Instead, the bursty nature of early galaxies, with periods of intense star formation, may heat the gas and stunt star formation. However, another study suggests that this effect may only be temporary. Further exploration and discovery of early, quenched galaxies are needed to better understand the mechanisms behind star formation quenching.
