Rabies exposure spike prompts CDC advisory urging rapid treatment
The CDC reports a rise in rabies-related inquiries across the U.S. from July–August (up 17% year over year) and notes increases in post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) use or errors, including a mass exposure event in North Carolina at a mobile petting zoo where nearly 300 people were exposed to rabies-infected goats. Rabies remains almost always fatal once symptoms start, but PEP is highly effective if given promptly and includes wound care, immunoglobulin, and a vaccine series. Officials urge timely care, vaccination for pets, avoiding wildlife, and reporting suspected exposures to prevent infection and unnecessary treatment costs.
