A coalition of 75 civil-liberties groups is calling on Meta to stop plans to deploy facial-recognition in the Ray‑Ban and Oakley smart glasses, arguing it would enable pervasive surveillance of bystanders, threaten privacy and democracy, and reflect a troubling pattern of biometrics use, amid reports of contractors footageing users and prior biometric lawsuits.
Meta's second-generation Ray-Ban glasses now feature AI capabilities that can analyze images taken by the on-glasses cameras and provide interpretations using generative AI. The glasses, which do not have a display, rely on Meta's AI voice to provide responses. The AI can recognize objects, identify ingredients, translate languages, and more. While still in beta, the glasses show promise for various applications, including assistive purposes. Meta plans to refine the AI features and incorporate more sensory data in future wearables.
