More than 100 cars were involved in a pileup on US-196 in Zeeland Township, Ottawa County, prompting closures in both directions from Hudsonville Exit 62 to Zeeland Exit 55. Authorities report numerous injuries, none fatal so far, with several semis jackknifed. Crews will keep the highway closed for hours as they clear wreckage. Buses from Hudsonville High School and Max Transit are transporting stranded motorists to Hudsonville High School for pickup; motorists are urged to stay in their vehicles if they can’t board a bus. The treacherous conditions are driven by lake-effect snow and wind; avoid travel today if possible.
The Franklin Fire has burned approximately 4,037 acres and is 7% contained. Topanga Canyon is open, but PCH is closed from Topanga to Kanan. Power has been restored to Malibu, and all traffic signals are operational. Mandatory evacuation orders remain for areas south of Piuma Road and north of the Pacific Ocean, while evacuation warnings are in place for other nearby regions. Several road closures are still in effect, and Malibu schools will remain closed. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow evacuation orders.
