The Rams received a two-week roster exemption for Aaron Donald after he returned from retirement, allowing him to remain on the active roster for Week 1 against the 49ers without occupying a spot; the exemption expires after the opener (Sept. 11), after which a roster move will be required as Donald ramps back up.
The NFL has passed a new rule that will make the role of QB3 a roster-exempt position, effective from 2023. The player designated as the emergency QB can not take the field unless both the starting and backup QB are injured, and if either of the latter are medically cleared to return to the game, the emergency QB must be removed from the contest. This rule will positively impact how the Dallas Cowboys manage their roster during the regular and postseason, and players like Will Grier will have a shot at suiting up for every game this season.
