Hidden Cold War Bunker Unearthed Beneath Scarborough Castle
English Heritage archaeologists, backed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, uncovered a sealed Royal Observer Corps Cold War bunker buried inside Scarborough Castle. Built in 1963 and sealed in 1968, the post featured bunk beds, communications rooms, an air‑filtration system and a 30‑day water reserve, with no windows. The find, part of a ROC centennial effort, deepens understanding of Britain’s civil‑defense network and paves the way for further study, including comparisons with a nearby restored York bunker.
