The number of people experiencing hunger has risen by 122 million since 2019, reaching an estimated 735 million in 2022, with the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine being cited as major factors. The annual State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report reveals that 9.2% of the global population faced chronic hunger in 2022, compared to 7.9% in 2019. Hunger is disproportionately affecting Africa, where nearly 20% of the population is affected, while projections indicate that the number of chronically undernourished people could reach nearly 600 million by 2030.
