Texas school accountability ratings remain stable, with 15% of campuses scoring below a C

Texas released its 2025-26 school accountability ratings on August 14, showing overall performance remained relatively flat. Of more than 9,000 campuses, 24% earned an A, 34% a B, 23% a C, 10% a D, and 4% an F. While 24% of districts improved their scores, 15% scored below a C. The ratings, based on STAAR performance, school progress, and closing achievement gaps, serve as a tool for parents and businesses, though critics argue they disproportionately penalize low-income and minority schools.

Texas districts face potential state takeovers as new school accountability grades reveal persistent failures

Texas released its annual A-F school accountability grades on August 14, 2026, revealing that at least five districts are nearing state intervention. Austin, Waco, Greenville, Ector County, and Ralls are at risk due to chronic academic underperformance. Austin ISD received a district-wide B, but two middle schools failed standards for a fifth consecutive year, triggering potential closure or board replacement. Ector County and Greenville reported gains. The ratings rely on STAAR performance, improvement trends, and support for underserved students. Critics argue the system penalizes high-poverty schools, while proponents emphasize transparency. Districts can appeal grades by September 11. This year also marks the first time public funds can support private or home schooling.
