Russia's 'scorched earth' tactics threaten Ukraine's hold on Bakhmut.
Russian forces are using "scorched earth" tactics in their assault on the Ukrainian-held city of Bakhmut in Donetsk, according to Ukraine's ground forces commander. The Russians are reportedly destroying buildings and positions with air strikes and artillery barrages. The battle for Bakhmut has been ongoing for months and is the focus of the biggest battle of the war. Control of Bakhmut could allow Russia to directly target Ukrainian defensive lines in Chasiv Yar in the east and open the way for its forces to advance on two bigger cities in the Donetsk region - Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
