SCOTUS Blogger Sentenced to Six Years for Tax Evasion Tied to Poker Debts
Thomas Goldstein, SCOTUSblog founder and prominent Supreme Court litigator, was sentenced to six years in prison for tax evasion and mortgage fraud after concealing more than $25 million in gambling income and deducting gambling debts as business expenses; the trial included testimony from Tobey Maguire, and Goldstein was convicted on 12 of 16 counts with prosecutors saying more than $9.5 million in unpaid taxes were owed. He faces restitution of about $3.1 million and five years of supervised release following his prison term.
