First Human Death from Shamonda Virus Confirmed in France
A man in his 60s in France has become the first known person to die from Shamonda virus, a pathogen primarily affecting livestock. The patient, who was severely immunocompromised due to leukemia, contracted the virus likely through a midge bite and died on October 9 after suffering neurological symptoms. While authorities deem the risk to the general public low, the case highlights emerging concerns about zoonotic viruses in Europe.
