NIST and SRI International are creating the Quantum Manufacturing Engineering Center (QMEC) with an initial $20 million to accelerate the scalable manufacture of high‑performance quantum components and systems, address manufacturing barriers, and strengthen the U.S. quantum industry through public‑private collaboration and connections to the Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C).
SRI International, a Bay Area nonprofit, has been behind groundbreaking technologies such as Siri, the Da Vinci surgical robot, and the underpinnings of the internet. The organization, which receives roughly 85% of its funding from the government, continues to explore advancements in robotics, artificial intelligence, space technologies, health research, and other areas. SRI uses a different model than private tech companies, building foundational technologies it can license to outside companies or spin off to become companies of their own.
