Pope Leo XIV Returns to Public Duties After Lung Cancer Surgery
Pope Leo XIV appeared in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, October 18, to thank the faithful after being discharged from Rome's Gemelli Hospital. The 71-year-old pontiff underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a malignant lung tumor, a condition discovered incidentally during a routine checkup. Doctors described his recovery as smooth, noting he resumed some administrative tasks and even arranged chairs in a hospital chapel before his release. The Vatican confirmed he will gradually resume his full schedule, including a planned trip to South America in November.
