Hong Kong Implements Tax Cuts to Stimulate Economy and Attract Foreign Investors
Hong Kong is slashing stamp duties on property purchases and reducing levies on stock trades in an effort to revive its struggling real estate sector and boost economic activity. This marks the first relaxation of property cooling measures since their introduction in 2010. The move comes as Hong Kong's post-Covid economic recovery remains lukewarm, with declining stock trading volumes and sluggish residential transactions. Home prices have fallen for four consecutive months. The stamp duty reductions include halving levies for non-permanent residents and residents purchasing additional properties. Additionally, stamp duties on property purchases will be suspended for new foreign talent, subject to obtaining permanent residency. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee also announced plans to reduce the stamp duty on stock transactions and implement measures to bolster various sectors in an attempt to enhance the territory's economic attractiveness.
