Watson Reveals Cult Upbringing Nearly Ended Career Before 'Breaking the Waves'
Emily Watson has revealed that her upbringing in a strict religious group nearly prevented her from starring in Lars von Trier's 1996 film 'Breaking the Waves.' Speaking at the Sarajevo Film Festival, where she received an honorary award and presided over the jury, Watson described how the organization forbade her from taking the role. She credits acting with saving her life and notes that the parallels between her personal exit from the group and the film's plot were profound. Watson also discussed her long-standing relationship with the festival, which she first visited in 1996, and dedicated her award to her late co-star Katrin Cartlidge.
