The number of stars visible in the night sky depends on various factors such as eyesight, background sky brightness, and light pollution. Under the darkest natural conditions, only a dozen or so of the brightest stars may be visible from a city center. In rural areas with dark skies, the eye can discern stars as faint as magnitude +5.5, resulting in around 1,400 potentially visible stars above the observer's horizon.
