A high-pressure system northeast of Hawaii keeps trade winds in place through next week, while an area about 1,100 miles east-southeast could become a tropical cyclone by midweek; if it moves toward the islands, the forecast could change dramatically, and a sizable east/southeast swell is expected later this week.
Large swells are battering the north-east Caribbean as Hurricane Lee, a category 3 storm, churns through open waters. Lee, which is not expected to make landfall, has winds of up to 115mph and is moving west and north-west. The storm's path is forecasted to pass well north of the north-east Caribbean, providing relief to areas still recovering from hurricanes Irma and Maria. While tropical storm conditions are not expected for any Caribbean island, Puerto Rico and nearby territories are warned of breaking waves up to 15ft. The US east coast is also expected to experience dangerous surf and rip currents, but the hurricane's impact beyond that remains uncertain.
Hurricane Franklin remains a formidable Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 140 mph. While it is not expected to make landfall in the US, it poses a threat to the Eastern Seaboard and Bermuda. The storm is forecasted to pass west of Bermuda on Wednesday, causing life-threatening surf and rip currents along the Southeast and mid-Atlantic. Swells and dangerous surf will impact Bermuda and the southeastern US, spreading north along the US coast and Atlantic Canada. Although the storm will gradually weaken, big swells are expected to linger through the Labor Day weekend, potentially causing beach erosion.
Hurricane Franklin has strengthened into a minimal hurricane and is expected to become a major cyclone while moving between the U.S. and Bermuda. The storm is forecasted to pass several hundred miles off the mid-Atlantic coast and is not expected to make landfall in the U.S. However, the Southeast and mid-Atlantic coasts may experience big swells and dangerous rip currents through the Labor Day weekend. Waves off the coast of North Carolina could reach 9 to 12 feet by next Wednesday.
