In-Plane Hall Effect Realized in an Atomically Thin 2D Material Stack
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon demonstrated an in-plane anomalous Hall effect in a few-layer TaIrTe4 placed next to a Cr2Ge2Te6 layer, showing that a magnetic field parallel to the plane can produce a measurable Hall signal. The effect arises from symmetry reduction and interfacial spin-orbit coupling, enabling a potential vector magnetometry approach with ultrathin sensors, though the exact microscopic mechanism and room-temperature operation require further study and exploration of other 2D material combinations.
