Grohl: Foo Fighters’ Freese Exit Was a Bandwide Decision

Dave Grohl says the Foo Fighters’ decision to move on from drummer Josh Freese was a collective, months-long process; the band called Freese to break the news and pursue a new direction, as they gear up for their 12th album Your Favorite Toy and an Australia–NZ stadium tour. Freese joined in 2023 after Taylor Hawkins’ death and has since pursued other projects.

Foo Fighters Part Ways With Josh Freese, Set to Welcome Ilan Rubin

Foo Fighters have told drummer Josh Freese that the band is moving in a different direction and will no longer be playing with him, with longtime Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin set to join. Freese, who joined in 2023 after Taylor Hawkins’s death, said the split came after a band-wide discussion about a new direction. Grohl stressed the change wasn’t abrupt and reflected the band’s evolving path post-Hawkins, as they prepare for a stadium tour. Freese will return to Nin during this period.

Foo Fighters' 'But Here We Are': A Heavy, Raw Act of Mourning.

Foo Fighters' latest album "But Here We Are" is a back-to-basics, emotionally charged record that pays tribute to the band's late drummer Taylor Hawkins. Dave Grohl returns to the drum kit while recording the album, which features soaring melodies and impassioned vocals. While some of the quieter tracks suffer from predictable lyrics, the album's closer "Rest" is a fitting eulogy for Hawkins, with bone-shaking noise and a hushed murmur from Grohl.

Foo Fighters' Powerful Exploration of Grief and Loss on Latest Album

Foo Fighters' new album, But Here We Are, is a response to the grief of losing drummer Taylor Hawkins and frontman Dave Grohl's mother. The album is back to basics, with muscular chords and melodic riffs, and features a stunning response to the pain of last year in the epic, shape-shifting rock song The Teacher. Grohl's honesty and vulnerability about his loss may inspire other writers to tackle the subject of male friendship in music.
