Disney+ released a 45-minute animated LEGO special retelling The Mandalorian on September 2, coinciding with the streaming debut of The Mandalorian and Grogu. The special features original voice actors but omits Gina Carano’s character, Cara Dune, reflecting her 2022 firing from the franchise.
Disney has confirmed that 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' will stream on Disney+ starting September 2, 2026. The film, directed by Jon Favreau, concluded its theatrical run with $345 million in global revenue, marking it as the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie to date. Despite the modest box office performance, the title is set to join the platform alongside a new LEGO animated special, reinforcing Disney's strategy of leveraging underperforming theatrical releases for long-term streaming and merchandise value.

Star Wars’ theatrical release The Mandalorian and Grogu opened with fanfare but plummeted 70% in Week 2, dropping to third place with about $25 million as indie horrors Obsession and Backrooms dominated the weekend. The result underscores ongoing franchise volatility, though Disney+ streaming promises long-tail audience engagement even if films stumble at theaters. With a reported $165 million budget (offset by California tax credits) and future projects like Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling, Lucasfilm and Disney aim to leverage Mandalorian’s brand to drive subscriptions and merchandise while refining the movie strategy.
The Backrooms, a new horror feature, is forecast to top this weekend’s box office and could beat The Mandalorian and Grogu, underscoring a strong appetite for horror and a potential indie victory at the theater.
The piece explains how Grogu was brought to life for The Mandalorian and the film through a hybrid practical-CGI workflow: Legacy Effects built multiple puppets and used several puppeteers on set, with CGI reserved for moments like slime or certain actions. The film introduced upgrades such as articulated fingers, more realistic blinking, and a ‘lawnmower’ rig to enable walking, while most scenes stayed practical and puppeteers were removed in post‑production to preserve the character’s charm Favreau champions.
The article argues that the Mandalorian and Grogu’s mission ends with a New Republic bombing of the Hutt palace, a unilateral act by Colonel Ward that could trigger Hutts’ retaliation and pull the New Republic into conflict. With the Hutts as a powerful Outer Rim faction and a pacifist-leaning Senate, this incident risks destabilizing the region and potentially foreshadowing broader canon implications involving figures like Grand Admiral Thrawn and the First Order.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu opened to $98 million in four days over Memorial Day in North America, a series-low for a Star Wars film, with a global total around $167 million by May 25 and a production budget near $165 million; the box office takeaway is tempered by the post-pandemic landscape, but Disney expects broader value from Disney+, merchandising, and theme parks.
Disney’s big-screen return with The Mandalorian and Grogu opened to $167 million worldwide over Memorial Day, the franchise’s weakest opening and even lower than Solo, suggesting fans treated it as a TV extension rather than a stand-alone theatrical event. While the second half is more cinematic and puppetry/stop-motion work shines, the film’s TV-aligned approach risks turning off potential IMAX ticket buyers and signals a broader challenge: Star Wars fans crave original, daring stories on the big screen, pressuring Disney to deliver bolder, original storytelling with future releases like Starfighter.
Boots Riley’s films and TV work fuse vibrant color, DIY effects, and sharp social commentary, using surreal visuals to critique capitalism and racial injustice; the piece also analyzes Daisy Ridley’s Rey as a nuanced, open-hearted Star Wars heroine whose arc evolves across The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker, balancing optimism with realism; it also touches on Michael Sarnoski’s The Death Of Robin Hood and highlights a standout Grogu sequence in The Mandalorian And Grogu that proves puppet storytelling can deliver real emotion.
Disney’s Star Wars adventure The Mandalorian & Grogu opens in theaters over Memorial Day, with tracking targeting roughly $82 million in domestic four-day grosses (some forecasts push toward $95–$100 million) and at least $160 million globally. It’s a high-profile, family-friendly entry after seven years since a Star Wars theatrical release, and its performance will hinge on family attendance and social buzz, while Disney meanwhile leans on Disney+ and related tie-ins to maximize overall franchise value.
