Alonzo Menifield battled through a severely injured right thumb—reportedly broken with bone protruding—as he defeated undefeated Iwo Baraniewski by split decision at UFC 331; a graphic image of the injury was later shared by Dana White, and while Menifield's win keeps his momentum, the thumb could sideline him for some time.
The Minnesota Vikings placed running back Jordan Mason on injured reserve with a thumb injury (reported small fracture fixed), meaning he’ll miss at least four games. With a Week 6 bye, Mason could return in Week 7. Mason led the Vikings’ backfield with 15 carries in Week 1, so Aaron Jones will likely see more carries while DeeJay Dallas handles a limited role; Demond Claiborne was inactive in Week 1 and could be active in Week 2, with deeper-league potential if the backfield pieces shift.

Max Scherzer overcame a stubborn right-thumb issue that threatened his career by turning to piano practice. With doctors offering no surgical fix, he strengthened hand muscles by playing weighted-key pianos learned from YouTube tutorials, starting in a Denver hotel and continuing on road trips. The unusual rehab coincided with a late-season surge that helped him anchor the Blue Jays’ 2025 postseason run, including a pivotal start at Dodger Stadium and a Game 7 in the World Series. He now keeps a piano in play at home and in his routine, convinced the habit keeps him healthy and sharp.
North Carolina freshman Caleb Wilson broke his right thumb in practice while dunking and will undergo surgery, ending his season. Wilson was UNC’s leading scorer (19.8 ppg) and rebounder (9.4 rpg) after returning from a left-hand fracture, and the Tar Heels are set to face Duke in their final regular-season game before the ACC tournament.
Francisco Alvarez of the Mets has a thumb UCL sprain and is on the injured list, with plans to evaluate if he can play through the injury before surgery, which would likely end his season. The team is hoping he can contribute later in the year as they fight for a playoff spot, but if surgery is needed now, his season could be over. Alvarez has been performing well recently, and the Mets are weighing the risks of delaying surgery against the potential benefits of his return.
The Mets will place catcher Francisco Alvarez on the injured list due to a right thumb injury sustained during a game, which will impact their offensive lineup as they struggle with an 11-16 record since the All-Star break. Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins expects to be out for about six weeks due to a thumb injury, specifically a Grade 2 sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament and a bone bruise, with an estimated return around mid-August. He sustained the injury while applying a lunging tag, and his absence has led to Andrew Vaughn and Jake Bauers sharing playing time. The team may consider adding another bat to bolster their roster during Hoskins' recovery.
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor plans to test his surgically repaired right thumb in practice this week with the goal of returning for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons. Despite the injury, Dillon is hoping to find a way to play against the Buccaneers this weekend, pending consultations with the medical team and coaching staff. Meanwhile, Aaron Jones, who has been limited in practice after missing three games with a knee injury, could provide a boost to the Packers' backfield if he returns.
Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon is dealing with a broken thumb sustained during Monday's game against the New York Giants. Dillon, who has never played with a broken thumb before, is uncertain if he can continue playing with the injury. The thumb is crucial for a running back, affecting ball security and making it easier for opposing teams to exploit the injury. Meanwhile, Aaron Jones, who has been out with a knee injury, returned to practice and is hopeful for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Packers' running back situation is further complicated by the re-signing of Patrick Taylor and the return of rookies Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks from ankle injuries.
Green Bay Packers running back A.J. Dillon's availability for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is uncertain due to a broken thumb. Aaron Jones is also working his way back from an MCL sprain, and his availability is still in question. If both players are unable to play, Patrick Taylor and possibly Kenyan Drake will have larger roles in the Packers' run game. The Packers face a tough challenge against the Buccaneers' stout run defense.
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor may miss playing time due to a thumb injury that requires further evaluation, putting his status in doubt for future games. Taylor sustained the injury during the first half of the Colts' recent victory over the Buccaneers but was able to play through the second half. If Taylor is unable to play, the Colts will likely rely on Zack Moss as their lead back.

He initially practiced with a glove on his throwing hand but now has it taped and will see how it feels on game day.
