
"Visualizing the Milky Way's Gravitational Waves: A Mesmerizing Video"
A simulated map of the Milky Way in gravitational waves has provided a glimpse of what future space-based detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), will observe. While ground-based detectors have detected over 90 gravitational-wave events, none have been found coming from our galaxy. However, our Milky Way is filled with ultracompact binaries, which emit gravitational waves at frequencies too low for ground-based detectors. Space-based detectors like LISA will be able to study the Milky Way in gravitational waves, similar to how astronomers study it in other wavelengths. LISA is expected to launch in the 2030s and is anticipated to discover tens of thousands of ultracompact binaries, enabling multi-messenger astronomy.
