UMass Upsets Rutgers as 29.5-Point Underdog in Season Opener

UMass stunned Rutgers 37-21 as a 29.5-point underdog, snapping a 16-game skid and marking the Minutemen’s second win over a current Power 4 program since joining the FBS in 2012. The Minutemen dominated on both sides—outgaining Rutgers 200-30 and forcing five turnovers—while QB William “Pop” Watson threw 3 TDs and KJ Duff had 196 receiving yards with 3 TDs. The loss fuels questions about Rutgers under Greg Schiano and its $17.3 million buyout, as UMass coach Joe Harasymiak celebrates his first win at the school.
