Mayor Zohran Mamdani approved 12-hour NYPD shifts for most uniformed officers from July 1–7 to handle World Cup crowds and other summer events, a move that will boost overtime costs (analysts estimate more than $20 million for July) and could alienate progressive supporters who want to curb police spending, as he defers to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on the plan.
