Synchronized Bioluminescent Mating Display of Sea Fireflies
Scientists have discovered a new species of "sea firefly," a tiny crustacean that puts on a spectacular underwater light show by sneezing up glowing mucus. These bioluminescent ostracods perform a carefully choreographed dance of synchronized light displays to attract mates. The courtship ritual begins at nautical twilight, with each male descending and releasing between four and eight globs of light. The display is triggered by the first male and spreads through a chain reaction. This coordinated group display is impressive for a creature the size of a sesame seed and provides rare insight into bioluminescent courtship.
