"Orange 'Super Banana' Could Revolutionize Health"
Scientists at Uganda's National Agricultural Research Laboratories have created a genetically modified "super banana" that contains high levels of provitamin A, which transforms into vitamin A in the body. The banana was designed to combat vitamin A deficiency, which causes thousands of deaths in Uganda each year. While bananas have been crossbred for improved resistance to pests and drought, this is the first time they have been fortified to deliver nutrients to humans.
