Water-in-Diesel Emulsion Could Cut Diesel Emissions by Up to 67%
A Nigerian study reviews Water-in-Diesel Emulsion (WiDE) technology, which evenly disperses tiny water droplets in diesel using surfactants to create micro-explosions that improve fuel-air mixing and lower combustion temperatures. Reported results across studies show NOx emissions dropping up to 67% and particulate matter up to 68%, with some gains in brake thermal efficiency. WiDE is presented as a practical, cost-effective way to reduce diesel pollution without engine redesigns, potentially complementing biodiesel and advanced emission controls, though more work is needed to optimize surfactant blends and assess long-term effects on engines.
