US Government Takes Action Against Oil and Gas Industry Pollution

The US Department of Justice has reached multimillion-dollar settlements with three major oil and gas companies over claims that they were using faulty equipment to manufacture and refine natural gas, failing to control leaks, and allowing hazardous air pollution to seep into the atmosphere in violation of the Clean Air Act. The settlements, which are subject to approval by a federal judge, will reduce air pollution and planet-warming gas emissions in a dozen states and Indian Country. The companies will spend approximately $16 million combined on repairs, upgrades, and other ways to fix the problems.
