US Energy Secretary Criticizes China's Insufficient Emissions Targets

The US Deputy Secretary for Energy, David Turk, has criticized China's emissions reduction targets, stating that they are not robust enough. He emphasized the need for both the US and China, as the two largest economies and emitters, to raise their levels of ambition. Turk also called on oil and gas companies to step up their efforts in reducing emissions, highlighting the importance of addressing Scope 3 emissions. He urged companies to invest more in clean energy and emphasized the need to follow the money to identify where investments are being made. Turk also stressed the importance of acknowledging the science behind climate change and developing credible plans to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century.

"California Lawsuit Exposes Oil Giants' Climate Deception, Seeks Compensation for Storm Damage"

California has filed a lawsuit against major oil and gas companies, including Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and BP, accusing them of deceiving the public about the risks of fossil fuels and their contribution to climate change-related storms and wildfires. The state is seeking funds from the companies to pay for recovery efforts following these disasters. The lawsuit alleges that the companies have known about the dangers of fossil fuels since the 1960s but downplayed the risks. The American Petroleum Institute and Shell argue that climate policy should be debated in Congress, not the courtroom. California's legal action adds to the growing momentum of holding Big Oil accountable for their deception and securing justice for communities affected by climate-related disasters.

US Government Takes Action Against Oil and Gas Industry Pollution

The US Department of Justice has reached multimillion-dollar settlements with three major oil and gas companies over claims that they were using faulty equipment to manufacture and refine natural gas, failing to control leaks, and allowing hazardous air pollution to seep into the atmosphere in violation of the Clean Air Act. The settlements, which are subject to approval by a federal judge, will reduce air pollution and planet-warming gas emissions in a dozen states and Indian Country. The companies will spend approximately $16 million combined on repairs, upgrades, and other ways to fix the problems.
