"Chronic Wasting Disease Detected in Deer in Indiana and West Virginia"

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources confirmed the first case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a deer harvested in LaGrange County, Indiana, adjacent to a region where CWD had previously been detected in Michigan. CWD, a neurological disease affecting white-tailed deer, has been found in 33 states, including all states bordering Indiana. The public is urged to report sick or dead deer to the DNR and have harvested deer tested for CWD, as the disease can spread through deer-to-deer contact or contaminated environments. The CDC recommends hunters consider testing their harvested deer before consuming the meat, and not to eat meat from an animal that tests positive for CWD.
