Uncovering the Ancient Genetic Origins of Multiple Sclerosis

Landmark research using ancient DNA reveals that genetic variants linked to multiple sclerosis (MS) emerged about 5,000 years ago in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, spreading into Northwestern Europe through the migration of the Yamnaya people. These variants likely provided protection against infectious diseases but also increased the risk of developing MS. The study also found that genes tied to Alzheimer's and type 2 diabetes originated in hunter gatherers.
