Deferiprone Linked to Faster Cognitive Decline in Alzheimer's Study

A study led by the University of Melbourne found that deferiprone, an iron-reducing drug, unexpectedly accelerates cognitive decline in early Alzheimer's patients. The phase 2 trial showed that while deferiprone reduced brain iron levels, it did not prevent hippocampal volume loss and was linked to increased volume loss in frontal brain regions. These results challenge the idea that iron chelation is beneficial for Alzheimer's, suggesting a more complex role of iron in neurodegeneration. Further research is needed to explore alternative treatments.
