Bogland tormentil: a wildflower unlocking new ways to fight resistant bacteria

Lab tests show tormentil root extracts from bogland inhibit growth of antibiotic‑resistant bacteria, reduce biofilm formation, and boost the effectiveness of the antibiotic colistin at low doses. The active compounds ellagic acid and agrimoniin appear to work by iron chelation, starving bacteria of a key nutrient and hindering growth, pointing to a potential plant‑derived route to new antimicrobials and combination therapies.

Deferiprone Linked to Faster Cognitive Decline in Alzheimer's Study

A study led by the University of Melbourne found that deferiprone, an iron-reducing drug, unexpectedly accelerates cognitive decline in early Alzheimer's patients. The phase 2 trial showed that while deferiprone reduced brain iron levels, it did not prevent hippocampal volume loss and was linked to increased volume loss in frontal brain regions. These results challenge the idea that iron chelation is beneficial for Alzheimer's, suggesting a more complex role of iron in neurodegeneration. Further research is needed to explore alternative treatments.
