When CRISPR–Cas is mutated or countered by anti-CRISPR proteins, these embedded systems become derepressed, boosting innate immunity at the expense of host fitness, thereby showing that CRISPR–Cas coordinates a layered, CRISPR-supervised bacterial immune network.
