Viral Vampires: How Viruses Feed on Each Other for Survival

Scientists have discovered two new satellite viruses that rely on bacteriophages, bacteria-infecting viruses, for replication. These unique viruses, named the Mulch and Flayer phage systems, were found in soil samples and target Streptomyces bacteria. The Flayer system features a virus-on-virus nibbling behavior, with the MiniFlayer satellite attaching to the "neck" of the helper virus, MindFlayer. This discovery expands our understanding of viruses and their evolutionary journey, shedding light on the complex interactions within the microbial world.
