Rare Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in DR Congo fuels containment concerns

DR Congo is facing an Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus, spreading in a conflict-affected area with about 250 suspected cases and 80 deaths. Bundibugyo has no approved vaccines or drugs and initial tests were inconclusive, complicating early detection. Containment relies on rapid case finding, infection-control measures, safe burials, and supportive care, all within a context of large displacement and cross-border movement. The WHO has declared an international emergency, but the overall global risk remains small; nonetheless international coordination is needed to prevent a repeat of the 2014–16 outbreak.
