Ohio's Constitutional Amendment Process Under Scrutiny.

The Ohio House of Representatives has delayed a vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that would make it harder for citizens to pass future changes. The delay means that the vote could run up against a Wednesday deadline if lawmakers are to place the amendment before voters on an Aug. 8 ballot. Republican lawmakers have rushed to schedule the referendum vote in August, which would ensure that the stricter rules apply to another effort to create a constitutional right to abortion in Ohio. The proposed amendment has united anti-abortion groups with pro-gun organizations in favor of the change, but opposition from former governors and attorneys general of both parties, elections workers, labor unions, the ACLU, the League of Women Voters and hundreds of others.
