Hurricane Lowell Heads Toward Hawaii, Bringing Big Surf and Uncertain Impacts

Hurricane Lowell remains a major Pacific hurricane with a sharp rightward turn toward Hawaii, likely missing the main islands but generating days of dangerous surf and significant rainfall. Forecasts expect winds up to about 50 mph in some areas and breaking waves up to 12–14 feet, with widespread rainfall of 4–8 inches and isolated totals over 10 inches on most Hawaiian islands. Most ensembles show Lowell staying west of the main islands, but a small chance of an easterly jog could bring impacts to Kauai. The Atlantic remains quiet through at least Sept. 11.
